The Importance Of Electricity In The Modern World
Electricity is an essential energy source, provided for convenient daily living and should be valued and utilized efficiently by all.
Centuries ago, mankind never imagined life easier through technology. At present, people cannot imagine life without electricity. Why? Let us elaborate on some aspects of life that electricity has improved.
Communication – This probably is the most improved aspect, affecting humankind. With electrically powered gadgets and computers, communication is possible, irrespective of distance. With a source of power, long distance communication is simplified via mobile phones or the internet. Can you still imagine the world without mobile devices?
Entertainment – Electricity has improved the entertainment industry immensely. People can utilise television and radios due to electricity, other than the printing of books and powering microphones. Imagine life without these entertainment appliances and equipment. Let us acknowledge that life could become dull without game consoles to entertain ourselves during spare time.
Work – There is no working environment, in whatever sphere, that does not need electricity. From construction to corporate jobs, white-collar to blue-collar work, electricity is required to operate some equipment needed to complete their daily tasks. Shortage of energy prevents companies from being operational and not delivering services as promised, to their clients, hence experiencing loss of income.
Transportation – Electricity is starting to transform the transportation system in many countries. Aside from trains, cars and other vehicles are now being designed to be powered by electricity, which is eco-friendly, and does not create harmful by-products such as carbon emissions. If all modes of transportation do not use petrol, air pollution and global warming will be solved.
Manufacturing – Electricity is an integral factor in the manufacturing environment and the production and consumption of goods and services. Machinery cannot operate without electricity and therefore is a vital commodity.
Hospitality – The food industry also needs power to operate. Production of food items has become easier and faster because of machines. Imagine fast food chains or restaurants having no source of power. Hours of waiting have now become minimal when ordering a meal.
Home – Electricity is also very comfortable for households. Homes can be equipped with air-conditioners in summer or winter, as well as deviate from traditional heaters and choose electric heaters during the winter season. The family may bond by watching movies on DVD or by playing games. These are just some of the advantages of electricity.
Renewable Energy Sources – There are also some disadvantages and issues concerning the production of electricity. The generation of electricity is primarily produced by the burning of fossil fuels. The emissions from the combustion is detrimental to the ozone layer. The fossil fuel is a natural resource and therefore non-sustainable. Once these resources disappear, the world will suffer. The good thing is that there are now renewable sources of electricity that are being discovered and developed. One such energy source is solar energy which uses the heat from the sun. Hydroelectric energy uses the power of water to move turbines. Geothermal energy produces electricity through heat from the ground. Wind energy produces electrical energy obtained from harnessing the wind with windmills or wind turbines.
